From the world’s biggest brands to society’s most basic unit

I loved my work as a digital marketing producer for companies like Toyota and Intel, and took pride in buttoning down every detail before going to bed. Then in the spring of 2017, I got the call: my mom had had a major health scare. Putting the world on hold, I flew back to Winona, Minnesota to be with her during an operation. The break gave me time to think things through. Who am I? What do I want? Who do I want to become? Maybe 20 years of an exciting—yet crazybusy—career had been enough for me. Meanwhile, I’d watched my friends and colleagues struggle to harmonize their careers, their families, their dreams. I saw a need, and then an opening. I hugged my colleagues goodbye and left to help others to get back to what matters.
